San Francisco 49ers running back Alex Collins is not expected to play in Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions, but coach Jim Harbaugh said Collins is in good spirits and should be ready to play when the team takes on the Cleveland Browns.
Collins has missed the past two games due to injury.
Collins had one catch for 5 yards against the Lions on Nov. 5 and has one catch in his last two games.
The 49ers were able to get two catches for 24 yards from Collins.
Collins said earlier this week he was still getting clearance from the medical staff on his knee injury.
He said he was not feeling great and could be sidelined until at least Nov. 14.
Collins played just five snaps in the 49ers first three games before he was ruled out.
He missed his last game with a shoulder injury.
It’s unclear if Collins will play against the Browns.
“He feels great,” Harbaugh said.
“I’ve been in that situation before.
I don’t know when he’ll play.
It could be Nov. 10, 11.
We’ll see what he’s feeling.
We have a lot of work to do, but he’s ready to go.”
Harbaugh also said Collins could have a “significant impact” on the 49er offensive line.
The first-year coordinator said the team will work to get Collins healthy before they open the season.
Harbaugh said the 49, with Collins’ production and leadership on the field, is going to need him to do more in the run game, but that Collins will be able to make an impact in the passing game.
“We’ve got to get him better.
He’s going to be a big part of our offense.
He was a big reason we had success last year,” Harbaugh told reporters Tuesday.
“If we can get him healthy and have him play better than he did last year, then I think it’s a win for us.”
Collins missed all of last season after he suffered a fractured collarbone against the Cleveland Bengals in the preseason.
He then missed four games during the season with an ankle injury.
Harbaugh has said Collins was healthy last year and he’s not concerned with his future.
He is scheduled to return to practice Wednesday.
The Browns opened the season on a three-game winning streak before losing their final two games of the season to the Seattle Seahawks.
